A lesson learned – if you don’t ask, you don’t get!

Something I have always been told is, if you don’t ask you don’t get and I wish this was a mantra I lived by as I was recently the victim of my own not asking!

On a recent trip to Edinburgh we went to the Witchery by the Castle  a beautiful restaurant set in the shadows of Edinburgh Castle.

Part of the appeal of the restaurant was a) it looked beautiful and the reviews were great, but b) they did a really good value 3 course set meal for £30! Even at weekends! Amazing!

So off we set for our dinner and was seated at the restaurant by a surly french (or faux french, who can tell) gentleman, who wasn’t the most helpful!

Upon perusing the menu it was clearly indicated that the £30 menu wasn’t available during the evenings which was kind of annoying given that we had been convinced to go by the discount prices, and every main meal was just under £30!!

Despite the set back, the food was delicious, I had Guy Grieve’s hand-dived scallops – Garlic,herb-baked with smoked Iberico pancetta and green salad, Yukon Gold potato mash and my boyfriend had Roast hot-smoked Loch Duart salmon, Sweet potato, green beans, butter sauce, both of which were lovely.

Upon leaving the restaurant I saw a poster promoting the special offer and clearly stating it was valid all evening – grrrr, why hadn’t I asked!! So instead of a whole array of delicious food, we had just one course and spent the same amount of money. So as stated at the beginning, if you don’t ask you don’t get.  Having said that, I do place some of the blame on the restaurant as the menu was not clear AND the waiter didn’t take the effort to explain that we could indeed eat from the set menu 😦

Next time I will definitely be asking!

Cake Factor – the results!

The vast array of cakes in the office actually resulted in many people feeling a little unwell just after midday yesterday! Having said that the office obviously has a wide and varied base of talented cake bakers!

The cakes available were (in no particular order) Chocolate and Guinness cake, Blueberry Bundt cake, carrot cake, fruit loaf, parisienne macaroons (with a scary red filling), chocolate and vanilla cake, a HUGE fruit tart and a walnut cake. Plus of course, my lemon sponge.

The competition went down to the wire, and winning by a hairs breadth was the Chocolate and Guinness cake! Looks like i’m going to have to up my game!!

Cake Factor….

So today is Cake Baking competition day at my workplace. Aptly and succinctly named ‘Xxx (workplaces’s name)’s Strictly Bake A Cake Factor!

Yesterday in the miserable pouring rain that you just don’t expect in June (even in England) I baked my favourite lemon sponge with lemon frosting in the middle and lemon sugar icing topping.

The judging takes place this afternoon and i’ll post again then with pictures and the results!

Special cakes

I haven’t written on here for ages- whilst i’ve been cooking as always life seems to have gotten in the way!

I, stupidly or otherwise have offered to make my friends wedding cake when she gets married next year. The cake making element of this isn’t going to be too much of an issue, i’m just more concerned about the decorations! I’m just waiting to find out her colour scheme and thoughts on what she might want it to look like and then the practising will begin!

Whilst i’m talking about cakes, I visited Edinburgh recently and visited an amazing cake shop called Bibi’s Bakery  http://bibisbakery.co.uk/ selling the most amazing looking cupcakes – I have been inspired to try out some new combinations like their After Eights (Choc cake with mint icing decorated with an After Eight) Chocolate Orange (Chocolate cake, orange coloured and flavoured icing topped with a chocolate orange segment) and the one that looked the most amazing, an Oreo Cookie cake – following the formula of the previous cakes with a delicious Oreo Cookie on the top!

I missed out on a great opportunity to road test these this weekend as it was one of my closest friends birthday yesterday, however she has also recently announced she is getting engaged so i’m sure i’ll have the chance to road test them soon!
